Try a mini kitchen makeover to save thousands on upgrades

Try a mini kitchen makeover to save thousands on upgradesOne of my favorite magazines, Consumer Reports, recently talked about those of us who are not going to spend $50,000 to make over your kitchen.  They brought a few ideas to the table that may cost up to $5,000 up could end up being what you are looking for and saving you money along the way.  Onto the list:

Refinish the backsplash
This is actually one my wife and I have already talked about doing.  At this point, we don’t want to spend the money or the time changing the kitchen counter.  So one other option would be to refinish the backsplash.  In our case, we are actually just going to replace the generic backsplash with something that goes better with our floors.

Revamp the Cabinets
If you have ugly cabinets that are structurally sound, then you can consider painting them or refinishing them.  The structurally sound part is important but you can change the whole look of your kitchen with this.

Add or update an island
If you don’t have an island, it may not be all that expensive to add one.  I know someone who purchased a movable one off of Craigslist for cheap.  If you already have one, look into options that could allow you to update it.

In with the old
Instead of buying new when updating your kitchen, look into used options.  I need to spend more time researching salvage shops that they talked about.  The article mentions Habitat for Humanity but I have not seen many items in the kitchen that I would want to re-use.

Upgrade the appliances
This will give you new features, better efficiency, and new styles to help make the kitchen look great.  This is definitely something to consider.

Change the surfaces
This would definitely be the most time consuming of them all.  They talk about changing the surfaces of your counter and even floor.  For our current house, that is something I am not touching.

Make your lighting shine
Adding lighting to your kitchen can actually make it more inviting.  There are a lot of different options to consider when doing this.
